Nah, there is no way that they would be so much surprised if they never saw rainbow before.
But with their technology, there is no way that they know what is it exactly. And probably have some myths that it's bridge that gods using to descend to the world and such bla bla bla.
tl;dr, he just halfheartedly created one of their heavenly myths... so...
