and the police will say in the newspapers that "this bastard did not have a helmet"

Angels are bad birds that ruin human habitats + Angels are weak -> Angels are vermin that ruin human crops with sheer numbers despite being so weak
Also,

Angels are so weak humans can kill them just by existing + There's a whole army of people in armor that resemble knights + Knights are amazing and strong -> The knights are here to defeat something scary and dangerous and definitely not the angels
-> Since I want to be a knight, I should try to help them out by dealing with these small fry so they don't get distracted on their way to the actual threat.

As a side, I'm surprised angels are being used to imply evil gods, since it was a goddess that helped the old couple sire a child in chapter 1. I mean, she was a bit stingy with the youth blessing, but...

@Psychronia Yea, that's probably along the lines of his thought process. Its a bit weak an excuse but for a manga with such a BS premise where nothing is taken that seriously its passable.

@Gauvain : The driver would likely still be at fault in the US, at least in the under the law. How they enforce that might vary on several factors like the demographics of the rider and driver and due to varying levels of bigotry and corruption that are too rampant in their system. The newspapers and other media would spin the story however they felt would best resonate with their viewers, which could go either way for the same reasons.

The angels are likely from some monotheistic religion, not connected to the goddess or most of the gods.
