It hasn't been stated, but I believe Alice is a lesbian. There's no way she could be in love with Renfred. More than anything, I think she wants to be able to protect him as she remembers that Renfred has gotten seriously injured protecting her.

I got your point, but the issue is with your wording 'simply because', because it's definitely more than that.

alice is telling chise part of her feelings but definitely not all of them because her analogy on page 31 is clearly not 100% accurate:

1. Alice hasn't been told 'you shouldn't bother'

2. none of renfred's interactions with her/ his conversations with elias suggest that he is treating her like a rat in a maze
