@NYAHAHA I don't read the novel, but I can give my speculation.
The blast needed to obliterate the storm clouds must have been very hot to get rid of them, so when it casted from a relatively close point he was caught in the blast. With the clouds dissipating, he lost his only remaining source of mana that could even keep him alive and protected.
