I'd have loved to read the ...what is this, a webtoon(?) where he is trying to find ways to escape, find ways to earn the trust of those around him, etc, etc. But nah, he's just another stereotypical (literal) white knight shounen hero

It’s just a common writing tactic. For example Naruto starting with showing a demon fox destroying the village but not getting there for quite a while. We will probably get there eventually. @Velsy the recruitment really isn't out of nowhere, it's been forshadowed by the owner of that restaurant having the brochure of this, and it's still in the beginning, it's not like the mc is going to be a runaway convict this early on
