Cooking manga tend to be some of the more wholesome in the medium. This takes it to another level, even touching on socioeconomic realities, to make us feel thankful for what we have. I was expecting him to be sent back to the present day at the end... a nice twist, a happy ending.

I mean... "it only happens in times of over-abundance and decadence" still fits the bill. I am not against eating contests, because honestly the amount of wasted food there is negligible in regards to what is needed to feed the starving population elsewhere, but to say it only happens in times of peace is not true. It only happens if there is a social class with enough leisure time and high enough income to live this kind of non-working life. Just because there is no open warfare doesn't mean the poor and lower classes aren't being discriminated against by the richer folks.
