@Psychronia A big theme in this story is the gap in social status. The heroine (not Mary) is socially inappropriate for the prince like Addie as merely Mary's servant is socially inappropriate for her.

A few chapters back, a very big deal is made of Alicia and Addie refusing loudly to make their love interests ruin their statuses as royalty and nobility just to be with them.

Tl;dr, Alicia isn't yet the future queen and isn't guaranteed to be so.
