I don't get it - his mom was that powerful but was defeated by the church? Maybe the church regressed, or he became even more powerful. Or perhaps there is more to the story.

@Binary10011 I'd be inclined to bet on the theory of the "curse" he has is hereditary and starts to show once the father/mother dies and he/she gets crowned/appointed as the demon king.
