I'm skeptical of Ellie's claim that beverage cultures only took off in Europe because European water was bad. I don't think there's any culture on real Earth that doesn't have some kind of traditional herbal tea drink. And the Camellia sinensis tea plant that grew popular in Europe came from East Asia, where it was already a popular recreational drink.

in my neck of the woods people go out of their way to specifically avoid drinking soft water

my house has a water softener but a separate tap for "drinking water" aka hard water because most people i know think soft water tastes disgusting

@dankdevice I’ve never drank hard or soft water side by side, so I don’t know the difference (in fact, I have no idea what kind of water is available in my area that I’m drinking) but I think some people don’t like drinking hard water because it tastes metallic or something
