@Wordsmith lol if you think that happened historically when the husband died early or became incapable. Mothers were bloody ruthless historically when it came to maneuvering their offspring to the throne. Of course it usually was against claimants from other family lines but nevertheless.

Yeah between the youth of the two(three) potential heirs and the apparently poor health of the reigning Duke it would not be strange at all for the Duchess to be named Regent and thus have the political power in the realm. It's also not surprising that she would try to maneuver her Second Son in as the heir since the First has such a major supernaturally caused issue which would prevent the continuation of the line via Him, not to mention the likely Diplomatic Strain that it could cause. Walter is the logical choice for the heir to the realm at this point.

But she's still a Massive Bitch.

*Um, short of artificial insemination. Is it bad for me to imagine Alice tying him down, for safety, and arranging for sperm samples by non-manual stimulation? "I know this is difficult, my Duke, but please bear with it for the future of the line. I will bear my Duke's son!"

You know.. I might be in the unpopular opinion for saying this. But there was something oddly tsundere-ish about the mothers action

I don't know maybe I have read fantasy stories with other terrible mothers. But this seems rather standoffish. Like something makes me feel she has a bit of regret from seperating her firstborn from the family but her pride and position as a noble prevents from thinking otherwise. Who knows I might be wrong and she is a demon mother

@infiniteVerisimilitude the moment a cousin appears claiming to be the heir to the state all shit will break loose and we will see the bitch mom, well in the same light, but we will understand the whys of her bitchiness, at this point their family is done for if anything were to happen to Walter since the Duke is useless as a heir.

@wilddeath No, we haven't established that, so it might be impossible. The general schtick does seem to be about touch, though, and it isn't like a "venom" thing 'cause it works even through gloves. I suspect that the magic is about him and separated bits wouldn't count, but it's just a suspicion.
