The duke typically IS of royal blood too.
Furthermore should have the strong support of other high nobles too. The royal family’s power relies a lot on the kingdom’s ducal families... the fact that FL and F-tard were engaged means that her father was the royal family’s main backer.
If an actual prince did this they’d likely be disinherited because of shame. If the king cheated openly with a woman of unfit background, they’d be forced to abdicate.

I know this is a generic setup but it gets more irksome everytime I see it...
