...and I do agree the emperor has been violent from the start, but isn't it a little charming that he's only gentle and nice with Hilde? I wish we have moe info on why he's so obsessed though.

Hmm, I'm usually not one the speculate beyond the information the author has given, but I honestly think that Caleb has her sister's soul. It would explain his inexplicable obsession, and it would explain why the story is focusing so much on their relationship, instead of the siblings. She's the one who assumed her sibling would be her literal sibling again. But then, this could also all be explained by bad writing lol
