The eternal DDoS

Every time I try to use the search bar without being logged in, it tells me that the web is under DDoS mitigation. It has been so for several months already.
The longer a DDoS attack lasts, the higher is the risk of being discovered. That's why the majority of the DDoS attacks lasts from 10 minutes to 24h.
My question is: What is going on here? This is not normal. When is going to finish that mitigation?

@Buldron The DDoS isn't constantly ongoing. But it does happen often. Used to take the site down at least every two days with us needing to turn captcha on to save the site. Search is just one of our more vulnerable areas on the site. Disabling search for guests permanently is another way of attempting to mitigate the possible effects of a DDoS. Wouldn't want to constantly be giving and taking away the ability to search, would be even more aggravating than just disabling it in the meantime. We have other constant forms of DDoS mitigation going, such as automated rate limits and IP bans. The current implementation of search will be completely reworked and when it gets updated, search will be reopened back to guests.
