The Gender of Mona Lisa - Vol. 1 Ch. 5 - Choice

So Shiori might be trying to hurry Hinase to turn into a girl so that they don't die, but how did Shiori know about the polish kid? It could be something else entirely as well.

Also, based on the extra pages, it seems Shiori is main love interest.

That guy is the worst doctor ever. Shiori's reaction is exactly why doctors don't give out personal information like he did; he could easily lose his licence. Now Hinase has to deal with new pressures from their friends, complicating their situation and undoubtedly hurting their mental health. I get the author did it for drama's sake, but wtf man that was a BIG no no.

I'm a little confused about the "Mona Lisa Syndrome" discussed in the Author's Epilogue. It seems like it refers to a facial paralysis condition- not gender or sex in any way. Is the author maybe talking about something else?

@Rougerogue author probably wanted to make up something for his manga with the name "Mona Lisa syndrome" only to find out that it's already the name of a real thing.

@skilodracus Yep, hate it too. But that last reveal that they literally die if they stay indecisive, he probably did it on purpose.

I like the idea this story is going for, though I feel the doctor character is totally miswritten for drama. In addition to giving out personal medical information (and defending it), he doesn't mention any risk at all to his research subject/patient, which is wholly irresponsible. I mean, it's definitely to move the plot along, but also seems like rather careless writing.

Man I hope Hinase finds a way to stay non-binary and healthy. There's more choices than male and female and I really don't think they're gonna be happy as either of those two 😔

I'm pretty interested in this story but yeah, even if it's intentional by the author, the doctor is so flippantly unprofessional that it's offputting.

Same as everyone else. The moment the doctor replied, the only thing I could think about is how he broke one of the biggest rule of being a doctor 👀 Like that kinda shit would end your career if the kid wanted it. If you want the kid to choose, just tell me that he might die otherwise lol but it seems like this doc ain't a real doc and is more of a scientist cuz he wants to see what'll happen to the kid if they wait out.

@chaichan1 there aren't actually more choices than male or female tho, since what he's deciding is his biological sex (not his gender) and by the looks of it choosing something outside of those two (like hermaphroditism) is not a biological option...?

Like how the doctor treating her like a test subject instead of a patient. I guess that talk about bugs and changes was worthwhile. Great bit at the end that has me hooked after volume 1

@chaichan1 What choices? Hinase needs to choose their sex not their gender, gender isn't a binary choice but sex is.
@Zeesnowflower2002 Yes, it exists, but it's also not a single middle point. It's a condition which occurs due to various chromosomal aberrations or other problems. Basically a congenital disease though saying that isn't really right.

Quite bold of the author to say "you must pick 1 of the 2 genders or die"

Just a middle finger to non binary aha

I hope he becomes male. I mean he already wears the male uniform.

@smolbaka You know you just look ignorant when you confuse what sex and gender means? No one is telling them to pick a gender, picking a sex is what's being asked for them.
