It's funny how in a society that let you choose your sex it still subscribes to such strict notions of gender roles.

This feels like a main critique being made by this series.

i.e. the What-if scenario of "even if you could choose...now what?" If society is still inflexible then you still have all these issues.
 
gender norms even in this world, huh. I get what the author is trying to show though. But still makes you sigh.
 
Sorry but I will dropp it now. I like the idea that at 12 years old you can choose your sex, but I don't like the story
