I dunno, it could also be someone who thinks they're just being loyal to the emperor. His butthurt, as you say, was so obvious it might have been too obvious. Everyone and their mother already knows the Feng family was perhaps acting a bit "out of line" as it were towards the emperor recently. Actually, not bad timing for someone who just has a grudge against the emperor to make a move either. He's the obvious suspect and all, maybe take down a rival in the process of making the emperor look bad.

He's upset that he couldn't learn, nor control, nor take the "hidden master" in the Feng family who called the lightning. Something only he should be able to do. So he got butthurt. Which is why he "sold off" the daughter.

These stories rarely have bait-and-switch, so there's little doubt that the Emperor was the one who sent assassins. Obviously more salt because the Feng family isn't falling in line and submitting.

I could, of course, be mistaken. I'm just stating opinions based on similar stories.

@Vasqueztion Yeah, I feel like the emperor probably did it too, actually. I just like thinking of multiple possibilities that authors could use in situations like this I guess. There is part of me that's more seriously considering the possibility it was someone else too though. Like that guy, what was he a minister? The one that delivered the edict about the marriage. Dude got shamed pretty badly by the father, people with money and power do not like that. Kind of the same reason the emperor is so likely and all.

I'm not really sure the age demographic of this but I'm guessing that they make the bad guys and their motivations real obvious cause they are either not that talented/original writers or are dumbing it down on purpose.
