Suffice to say I had to refer him to a dictionary numerous times, and his replies ranged from self-contradictory to blatant ad hominem when he eventually ran out of red herrings.

I think I might get what you mean on the first one. There may have been some sort of meta-context required for my assertion to work. I don't really remember anymore.
But looking at it again now, it looks indeed wrong. But just to be sure I actually know what your referencing, could you be a little more specific?
On the second point though; google defines subjectivity as, and I quote: "The quality of being based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions."
And I used the analogy I used to exemplify that different people have different evaluation standards. And different evaluation standards are the result of differences in personal feelings, tastes or opinion.
Hence, the nature of the evaluation is still subjective.
