Honestly, I think Lily was definitely the closest thing to a friend Scarlet had. As others have mentioned already, Lily may have been killed after prying too much into Scarlet's death. Maybe Lily figured that after gaining power through her efforts and waiting for things to cool down then she'd be able to gather information safely, but for whatever reason she garnered too much heat and was killed off. Either the people involved are still very wary even after all these years or Lily made a mistake somewhere as she was gather info.
