@nachtness it is hinted in yhe earlier chapters the it is the Lady of Peony Faction who sent the assassin. He even appeared on the ball, jut casually observing at the window.

More so than any kind of actual high society political intrigue that seems to be the intended pretext, everything feels more like high school petty squabble

I agree with Epicredeemer. I don't think the king even smart enough to commission a "secret assassin". He's the type to yell to his soldier to kill someone in broad daylight.
