Checked the weather? They don’t have a local weather channel to check, lol. I don’t know how they would assess the situation back then. Maybe putting a wet finger in the air? That still isn’t going to tell you everything you need to know.

Well... if the enemy only has arrows, the only thing you need is a cover over the rowers heads.
I don't know jack about carpentry or ship building, but that probably shouldn't be to ohard, there's lots of designs to do that.
e.g.1. most people can take cover within the hull of the ship, underneath the main deck.

Question: Doesn't their armour protect against the arrows? If its a headshot I understand, but there where some hitting the torso.

I don't get it. Why are they just don't cross the river in a different place and attack from the ground at full force instead of sail straight against the river current and under the rain of arrows empowered by the wind?
@Nixnaw as I mentioned just now, arrow power is reinforced by the wind what increases its piercing power. And looking at soldiers I'm pretty sure they wearing chainmail(made from metal rings) under surcoat instead of plate armor. And chainmail is more prone to penetrating damage due to its structure.

This chapter was doing so well until that first guy was shot through his collar plates. I certainly hope Pauliana doesn't save the day with common sense, because I don't want the Emperor and his army to look just as bad as her first army.
