Review: This is a "slice of culture" manga that gives Japanese myths a sort of conspiratorial X-files treatment. The story follows the eponymous Professor Munakata, a mostly serious, slightly cranky, and definitely eccentric scholar of myths. In the typical case, Prof. Munakata, a buxom graduate student, and a rival team who trample all over archeological sites for fame and fortune investigate a recent discovery, collapse the roof of a mysterious hole, uncover something of mythological significance, and the corresponding Japanese myth repeats itself in modern setting. Prof. Munakata, by virtue of his temperance and knowledge, usually manages to extricate himself and whoever else had not been too greedy from whatever dire situation ensued. It's an interesting read if you like lesser-known Japanese mythology, Indiana Jones, and crackpot theories and cryptids. It has a slightly less fantastical sequel in The Case Records of Professor Munakata.
