That job is similar to plumbing or any job that handle refuse where people do not list as their dream job despite having a decent salary at least in the first world countries(where the dirtiest part of the job is already automated) . From what I know their salary is capable to support a family.

This is similar since the past they touch refuse directly with little sanitary equipment but now those part are automated and/ or with proper equipment.

Although more similar is in the future where droids would do do direct contact with the refuse , people only monitor. Droids are also salaried much like their familiars.

I think the reason why a lot quit because the job also include psychological treatment of lost souls hence why they are sworn to secrecy. The stuff that will weight heavy in their mind and they cannot share it due to confidentiality.
