Imagine spoiling the livelihoods of probably like 40 people, framing a couple more, and threatening to ruin the mayor's reputation - all in all, taking 2-3 days of work - instead of walking up to the guy and going: "hey, I'd like to meet my friend, here's proof of my identity [I'll kill you if you leak]".

The problem with proving his identity is that it's really hard to do so.
I mean he was executed, and the fact Ban is in hiding isn't exactly a secret.
If you would walk up to somebody and say you are looking for a wanted criminal, nobody who actually knows the criminal would admit to it.
Also not to mention, the mayor being the snake that he is would most likely consider every single outlandish option first, before believing you at your word.

I am starting to dislike the MC. Yes, he was mistreated, but not by the common folk of a free city. Ruining innocent lives for his revenge and then getting people to lie for his plans means that he is becoming the very thing he supposedly hates.
The MC could've used other methods to get in touch with Ban instead of sabotaging the lives of others.
BUT NO, he instead created a problem, made a solution that made those thieves desperate to steal, and then pinned the crime onto the mayor whom he was ripping off even though he was already rich.
Did he forget that his original goal was to take revenge on the emperor? Truly disappointed.
