I don't see how Alex is stupid. If anything, he's endearing especially with his backstory in mind. I don't blame him for being emotional, guy had a rough upbringing

Emotional still ends up being stupid most of the time. Come up with any excuse you want, but his stupidity exemplified by his actions in crisis tend to remove A LOT of the tragedy from the situation. Rather, his stupidity IS the tragedy.
