This is what happens when plot get secondary to cheap dramatic effects. Whole reasoning was "It was long time since duke did something heroic, let him save our poor MC from abusive mother". For that sake mother goes enraged for literally no reason and immediately proceeds to publicly beat up her dauther just to create opportunity for duke to save her... Oh and she has appointed personal bodyguard too, but we can't let him steal the spotlight right? Lets pretend he doesn't exist. And lets make mom's facial expressions exaggeratedly vicious and evil, so even 10 y.o. girl readers could notice that she's bad...
I had much expectations for this series it started very promising, with whole clever scheming premise, but you don't need to develop intricate schemes if your enemies behave like brain dead idiots and make mistakes for no reason. Episodes like this one defeats whole purpose of this manhwa. Its just bad writing, i can't even make an excuse for this.

That her mother was anxious at the mere thought of her daughter becoming independent (stepping outside her cage) is well embedded in the story.
Tia never had any friends or any romantic relationships. Her mother came back from her vacation to find her engaged daughter hosting a party. So she was angry about the fact that she lost control over her.
But I guess the ML appearance was kind of over the top, all in all I think that his devotion towards Tia is unfounded and badly written.

You know, when you live with someone you learn ahout this person, especially if it an abuser.
Because you need to know how this person think to not anger him/her.
So in absence of backstory of the character, you can suppose that the MC know very well how to not be in the bad side in her mother (chap 18), the fight with the buttler in chap 19 tell us that she "need" a permission to prepare a room for buy dress.
She knew how think and behave her mother and what appened if she did or say X thing.

I think while the scene may feel dramatic to some folks it isn't an exaggeration to see her mother respond like this when the entire comic has been littered with hints at just how serious the abuse is, while the art style and main character herself downplays it. Like we didn't necessarily know she was very clearly malnourished and was being denied new clothes and necessities until the ml's narration and her party where she wore the same formal dress.
But we did see how her mother emotionally abuses her and manipulates her, we did see that she would take the place of a punching bag for her mothers often random violent physical outbursts for the sake of the servants who even looked down on her, the butler could demand she do things which is so wrong. She even was controlling her appearance, likely thru withholding those necessities and dictating what hair, makeup, clothes she could have to prevent any man from wanting to marry mc, ever. Probably also related to her denigrating mc's appearance, intelligence and skills constantly so she never has the confidence to see leaving as an option on her own (which works in the og timeline).
And then there's her mothers seeming resentment of men and of the idea of her daughter leaving her. She pretty clearly doesn't want that bc she loves her, instead it seems to be a control thing. She needs her in view to keep being a tool for her and for her son, bc that's the only reason she exists in her mothers eyes. She isn't a human, or her adorable baby, only the shitty older son is her baby.
I mean the entire premise is based around that she should dirty and chip away at herself so her dumbass incompetent psychopath brother can have the throne. (he seems to have inherited mum's resentment complexes too) This kind of baldfaced violence from a woman who has gotten away with this level of abuse for so long? Not so surprising imo.
Her daughter is doing things without her permission, not necessarily for her son, or for her mother, she's telling people off who are her mother's people, she's throwing a party without her mother's permission, with people who are not important to her mother or brother, for her own benefit. The awful woman must feel like her daughter is wretching control from her.
And then mc needs someone to be on her side bc in the original timeline she really did have no one to help her improve her life bc everyone immediately around her either had no power to help her (the kinder servants) or were actively using her and couldn't give a toss about her unless it's to tie up a loose end. I dread to think what would have happened to her if she didn't use the ml as a sort of shield for some moments in this story.

Thanks for dudes in comments for doing author's work and putting a semblance of reasoning in this cringe episode. I'm not so salty anymore and can even make peace with it. But the mere fact that I need an external help to justify some or others actions, it clearly shows that writing was sloppy. Maybe author should have spent more time exploring mother/daugher relationship instead of showing how entranced male lead is with MC (for no real reason too, he doesn't struck me as puberty boy to get infatuated so easily, you know). Anyway, I demand intricate plotting and schemes and I see none, i'm dissapoint.

I think the mother generally abuses Tia for no reason at all. But I think that this one was heightened by Lawrence being linked with the casino owner that was revealed by the Duke for human trafficking. And the Duke being close to Tia.
So she took it out on Tia along with the fact that Tia was "doing something she didn't consent to".
So was this all planned by Tia to slowly show the the Emperor/society that Lawrence and her mum are unstable and plant seeds of doubt to unsurp Lawrence from being heir to the throne
.

Anyone saying that the mom's behavior is not realistic probably never saw abusive parents in real life, and I don't blame them for that as it isn't something you commonly see (thankfully so).
But believe me when I tell you this isn't unrealistic at all lmao. My late father would have had the exact same reaction, regardless of whether there are guests or not lmao. So yeah, the author didn't exaggerate anything on this one, especially since, as other pointed it out, this sort of """education methods""" are more common in Asian culture (in Arabic culture too btw).
