it's because the emperor actually "de-fanged" her power long ago and cornered her politically. He only married her because her family line could help legitimise his claim to the throne, and once he was in power he purged the empress' family and allies because he was selfish and didn't want to share power with anyone. She lives alone in her palace, fearful of getting close with anyone lest the emperor execute them for colloboration.

@WLeung I see this opinion often, I think you are relying too much on small details of beauty. I always thought that the two main characters are just as beautiful. Their hair colors are not flashy, but that's about it. I don't think they are inferior at all.
