It almost always depends on the type of magic system. Some magic systems are weak enough that a gun would seriously fuck up the balance, like Harry Potter. Other magic systems, like Marvel, DC, or other systems with high power level scaling will make guns absolutely useless because the magic is so powerful.

In this case, it seems the magic system is weak enough that guns would make a serious difference.
