You'd be amazed how arrogant people can be. They're so convinced that their opponent is inferior to them that they see no issue with making allowances for themselves. These people could never beat you at your best. Hell, even if you half-ass it they're not going to come close. It's astounding.

A great example is the Japanese Empire in WWII. An ugly and often ignored truth is that a large part of their success was due to the arrogance of the 'white' powers believing that there was no way a country of an Asian race could beat a 'white' one. Because of that the Allies sent low quality materiel to the theater thinking it'd be enough to crush some Asian power (the Zeros had a lot of fun with those outdated planes), the British Pacific Fleet got annihilated (there's a great eyewitness account from a British reporter who talks about how they all thought the Japanese would come at them like some African tribe savages and then they hit them with what was literally the most tactically advanced naval air force in the world and just decimated them) and the Allies got knocked out of the Pacific (why put tanks to defend your colonies when there's no 'white' empire threatening them?).

@spiderbait Sorry, but that sounds like nonsense. European powers knew well enough the Japanese military might. It was also a part of the Washington Naval Treaty, with the third largest navy in the world. European powers were kind of busy with the war going on in Europe. That's the reason why Asia got lesser resources. The USA got caught pants down by Japan because due to internal reasons the USA was living the dream of its isolation policy and ignored all warning signs. The Washington Naval Treaty actually also encouraged naval aviation for all the participating nations due to some (intentional) loopholes concerning aircraft carriers. This was obviously something all participants knew and put to use.

If a British reporter didn't know something, it's just a single civilian not knowing something and being arrogant.
