@bradek - The prince knows the Empress has spies in his household, so he'd just assume it was them. He might even assume it's one of the maids whom Canaria had dismissed, which would be another point in the favor of her being his ally.

It's a smart play, since Canaria has a decent gauge of the Empress from the book, but it's still very risky this stage. Double agents tend to have very short shelf life.

That's a dangerous game she's playing there.

I mean, anything she does is a dangerous game. Follow the novel? Executed. Cozy up to Cesar? Empress is displeased and banishes her from the palace at best. Cozy up to the Empress? Basically the same as following the novel since she'll be Cesar's enemy. Playing them both from the middle at least gives both of them enough that they might find her useful for the time being.
