I know this might out there, but I'm actually rather curious if "John Smith" is actually the MC, "having people hunt him down" is basically like having them deliver there relics to his door step. Then again it could also be as @shntaro said.... A relic, however I think that John Smith is to on the nose for it to be a "prideful relic" such as the relics.
