@The5thSeraph I've noticed this kind of thing in Manga quite a bit. This weird blame shifting that doesn't fit the tone of the story. The guy is a foreigner who asked everyone around town, no one told him anything, and then he's ridiculed when he learns that the ONLY place that sells what he's looking for is the place he's when he still wasn't informed about it. But somehow that's his fault?
Does Japan just have this idea that anything that happens to you is your fault or is this just a thing among mangaka?
You hoard everything and hate spending any of your money unless absolutely necessary. Such is the life in a fantasy setting, or so says 20+ years of gaming.
*Playing Grim Dawn as a beginner*
"Every last Iron Bit counts, better pick up and sell even the lowest tier grey gear. Spend it? N-no, I might need it later!"
*Playing Grim Dawn after 500+ hours*
"Wait, I can roll both rare sufixes and prefixes on ordinary green crafted items, making them potentially better than some legendary items" *R.I.P. the combined savings of all characters*
*Playing Grim Dawn after 900+hours*
"Well unless the green items have at least 1 rare sufix or prefix, they might not even be worth looting due to the time it takes to sell.."
Some of these RPG's really make the scrap you once fervently collect seem meaningless past a certain stage. If you know "everything" about a game, it's easy to spend money with no regrets.
For example, replaying Gothic 2, you bet your ass I invest all spare gold into fucking apples and fish for the extremely inefficient yet permanent strength and mana boosts.
@Hitspark
I feel like it's to showcase how humble and virtuous the character is, which is very often portrayed as the most desirable traits. The common "gotta hide muh power level" plots seems to be derived from the same idea.
Writer/Editor:
"Well we do want a really strong main character, but how do we make him appear righteous and likeable? I know! We'll have him hide his power to show how much self restraint he possesses and the ability to act humble despite overwhelming ability!"
@Degernase That would make sense, I mean it would also help if the character was actually doing something to show these characteristics but Japan is weird with this stuff. Take what we can get, I guess.
