Before the advent of electronic submissions, paper tests were still the de facto assessment method in comp sci classes (like mine). They weren't difficult, but they definitely were tedious. Didn't matter as much in higher-level courses where questions were more theoretical than practical.

That said, tech's made it much easier to allow students access to a dev environment (with proper security controls to mitigate cheating!) and test digitally, so paper's far less appealing in 2020 than it was in 2010 (when I was an undergrad). Not much excuse now to stay on paper.
