To be honest, I think the time-skip idea could've worked but they just got back together way too quickly. I think the sudden separation actually makes sense in the context of young love: if the author developed the relationship more before the time skip, and then had their characters dramatically change after the time skip rather than having them get back together in like 10 chapters, I think it would've been a interesting story. The way the time-skip is now makes it seem like between high school and college the character relationships stayed almost the same, which makes no sense.
