Clive is actually pretty smart. By going on free-will with her he can avoid the grudge from her creepy ass uncle and there are not strings attached between them afterwards; she doesn't look like a bad girl, just a spoiled child but she didn't treat them with disrespect - since the problem is her uncle, taking him out of the equation solves the issue nicely.
 
While it is Clive's choice, I can totally understand why Clarence is pissed off.

You either get a monetary debt or constant berating of a girl whos in love. The 2nd is far easier to take care of, especially if Clive can successfully peel her off him.
