It's a good plot device for an arc, especially for the medium that this manga uses (people made out of objects).

If I was to be sent inside a novel amasogi, I would preferably read the novel first, or at least check description/review and major plot points from the Internet, before going in. Of course there's always the possibility Mami isn't simply self-inserting to end the story of the novel as it did but would fancy to do things differently, but nonetheless it would help a lot to know as much as possible beforehand.
