I know people that have taken care of a cactus so poorly it exploded. The bonus? It wasn't even theirs, and they weren't asked to take care of it. They both just made their own assumptions that the owner wasn't taking care of it, and so they both over watered it at the same time while the owner was watering it right on schedule anyway.
