Aw man that went from menacing to cute to tearful fast huh. I really adored the menace of those robed figures, and how they kind of just. Slumped. With indistinguishable figures. Enough to make you wonder if the shape underneath is even human. Mr. Ito would approve, surely... well... maybe after like 2000 more hatchmarks.

I just realize the 500 yen is Ponko, the first chapter flashback when she said she will be scrapped into 500 yen coin as she finished her last job

The 500 yen coin is metaphorically Ponko, which is why he doesn't want to give it away, and why it saves him from "going towards the light".
Ponko is literally the nickname for his wife.
Ponko gives him companionship and meaning now he doesn't have Ponko.
