The impression I get is that he DOES want his son to be what he wants to be, so he did that the only way he knew how; by giving him as many opportunities and options to choose from as he could.
Unfortunately, he never actually asked his son what he wants to do because he's an autistic weirdo who can't convey his thoughts properly and probably assumed his son would volunteer the information like his wife did.
