WOW, even thou he knows he could just kill her, or mock her for being weak, he left her have her way with her pride and determination, what a nice uncle(in those times, mocking her would have being normal, y'know ethics weren't that popular b'then).

Well, you see, he realized that she was actually ready to fight the damn Thorkell the Giant himself. He just appreciated her warrior spirit. You can say that her determination gave him all of the emotions of a good fight. He respects people who are not afraid of a fight. I guess he got even more respect for a woman who was not afraid to fight him.
