Meh, so what? They just gonna bring shields and use tools as weapons if needed?I mean if this ends up being historically accurate they all gonna die miserably in the winter pre quick.

Trying to have arguments with people who don't understand the philosophy of this manga is very frustrating... good job to those of you who are trying. Thorfinn *literally* dismantles every argument made by the "war is inevitable" faction in this chapter and here you all are, still making the exact same arguments over and over again. It is actually sad that sensei has to put such a blatant one-on-one argument into the manga to try to deal with this type of reader.
You only think war is inevitable because of the society you grew up in and the world in which you were raised. You quote history while ignoring all the thousands of years of peace in between the wars. All the people NOT running around and shooting each other for toilet paper right now in the real world. *Please* broaden your horizons and believe something good might happen. At least wait around and see if it works out rather than actively sabotage it. That is all Thorfinn asks. I am going to die someday. I have been hurt before by people I trusted. I'd still rather live my life trusting and loving people than hiding and lashing out anytime anyone gets close. Thinking love is impossible so not even trying is taking the easy way out, childish, and fucking tragic. I am honestly so sad for you all.

Thousand of years of peace? When did that happen?
Western Europe is at a record time of peace within itself and that's just about 75 years now. It still fought wars outside of it in that time-span.
The US arguably is constantly in some kind of war somewhere.
The last time the World was at total peace was after WW1 ended I think and that lasted about a week before the next conflict started.
Most times of peace where just regional or inside a bigger entity like the EU or the Roman Empire.
War isn't inevitable, but it sure was always present throughout human history.

War is part of human culture. There are conflicts everywhere all the time and it's not because of 'society', it's because of nature. Animals are at a constant war, we are no different to them, we just believe we are because we can 'think'.
Yes, there's a chance we humans might be at peace with each other but that's an utopia and you only need one person to reignite the war machine.

Naive, hopeful and tragic philosophy. It can work in small groups of like-minded and trustworthy people. But will inevitably fail outside of fictional boundaries.

What means is there to maintain peaceful society with even one anomalous aggressor? What protects a peaceful society from outsiders that mean harm? Even his father exerted violence with his fists to protect what he valued.
A large proportion of murders these days are from emotional outbursts from people you know. These wouldn't really be prevented even if they knew violence was unacceptable. Simply removing swords as an answer to preventing violence is juvenile. It doesn't address why violence is committed at its root cause. It's acceptable only because it's a fictional tale.

@ShaiHH You are still only talking about Western Europe from 1800s on. Humans and our ancestors have lived for literally millions of years. Do you really think everyone from the last 2 million years across the whole world was constantly at war with their neighbours? How could that possibly be more beneficial than cooperating? It even has been shown by researchers that most civilizations that "collapsed" didn't do so because of wars or hubris or massive sudden calamity, it was just that people decided they didn't particularly like living there any more and over time moved away to form smaller communities.
I'm not saying there was some idealized world where there was no interpersonal violence at all, but the whole idea of completely destroying another group of people and treating the loser like slaves is not universal. During, for example, Alexander of Macedonia's conquest of Western Asia there was very little actual violence outside of set battlefields. For local peoples, it was mostly just a change of who they paid their taxes to. So for some people there was a war, but for a lot of people it was just another day. And if someone really really didn't want to pay their taxes or hated their neighbours they would just pack up and move away. Like the Greenlanders did and how Thorfinn is now trying to do.
