Vinland Saga - Vol. 24 Ch. 173 - Sailing West Part 7

21st century ideas of global trade
21st century ideas of interracial marriage
21st century ideas of transsexuals

the manga blows dick, and none of the beliefs of its characters are appropriate for the time period

The birth of capitalism

I'm no political expert but isn't what Halfdan said on monopolizing violence what Canute is doing?

@supermoonchrome I mean have we not seen a man wield a log like a twig? Vinland Saga has roots in history but the author has shown that they would rather tell a story than a documentary.

This may be a manga but the fundaments and principles came from good will, it is a difficult task to achieve but it is difficult because it is good!

This is all going to go to shit when Eyver will try to overthrow Thorfinn, trade with the Americans turn sour because of lactose intolerance or worse.

I'm glad that Thorfinn's ideas panned out an the Vinland colonization was a long-term success.
Vinlandia is such a great place to live. Imagine if it hadn't worked, who'd want to live in weird countries with names like Canada or America.

Such an amazing character arc for Halfdan. He's come a long way from the cold, cruel father of an evil bastard. Really amazing the depth given to side characters. It's a very touching offer. For him to not really like Thorfinn, yet be able to see his value, his potential... yeah. Lovely chapter.

I am a bit disappointed by the way the author is approaching those notions. It makes no sense for Halfdan and Thorfinn to suddenly talk about the use of sanctionned/unsanctionned violence and interdependence between groups og people as a way to avoid war. This is clearly the author putting ideas from modern history that only seem evident in retrospective. Same thing with Cordelia, they accepted to call her a woman far too easely, they didn't even really discuss her gender. The suspension of disbelief is broken, at least for me.

There are good ways to deal with those topics though! Thorfinn could have discovered the principle of interdependence during his trip that we didn't saw (fucking useless ellipse...) . He could have also met a transgender or a non-binary person in India, and developed his thougths on the subject over several chapters.

Thank you so much for the chapter!!
I'm so glad Cordelia got to go on their adventure!! Halfdan is really a softie inside, first with his son, now with Thorfinn (his second son coff, coff)

When you isekai'd your characters to the modern world and back off screen...

So what will Thorfin do if Vinlanders reject them to settle there? Going back?

I think there will be some BS plot armor or probably no rejections at all.

Huh, my comment got moderated because I used the r-word. MC is still super stupid though.

@supermoonchrome

-No, that is not 21st century ideas of global trade. Interdepency already exist before that. Like ancient egypt make bronze tool with raw material from outisde it's border or Roman that trade their limited gold supply wiht spice from india.

-Also interracial marriage is exist since pre-history. Do you think different community just kill each other when they meet? No, of course not they also fuck each other. Let's take example Medieval Rus, nordic people intermarry with native slavic population or another example is Arab people intermarry with West African native in Medieval Mali. Heck, even greco-persian intermarriage is introduce by Alexander the Great after his conquest of persia.

-The trans one is kinda anachronistic but people with Dysphoria exist since ancient time. Real life example is Emperor Elagabalus. So it is kinda inaccurate but who can deny Cordelia having a dysphoria?

And lastly, There is exist billion of people in the past. There always a chance that a person or even a community at some point in time to have some believe or understanding that seem like anachronistic for modern historian. It is true we dont have any evidence to support that but we dont have evidence to reject that. Just because something/someone doesnt left some artifact or documentation doesnt mean that person/thing didnt exist. In my opinion because there is a posibility of anything we can fill it with anything and it is not even wrong. Until we have more evidence, i cannot value this manga anyless as a story that take place in Canute's era.

Edited because of typo.
Also i am not native english speaker, sorry for my error.

I love baby-faced Thorfinn lol

I'm really curious to see if he can retain his happiness if his experiment doesn't go well

Ah yes... Thorfinn... how bout the language barriers... even tho you've traded at faraway places before... it's still gonna be trouble
