Yep, that was a brainfart on my part. Original text says 先住民 (senjuumin), which translates to native or indigenous people. Good catch!

One thing that really hits home is that way back when Leif first told the story to the kids by the fire, he said that only true warriors got to wear that head piece. Now he passes it on to Thorfinn. I love this manga.
