He can only read minds if people meet his eyes. Notice how often the MC avoids looking him in the eye? Looking at their hands when dancing, or off to the side. She doesn't always remember to avoid his eyes (years of habit aren't easily undone), but she tries to only look him in the eye when she wants to send certain thoughts.
