my stance is that tradition is there for a reason. While some reasons are bad, immoral, or now obsolete, some are still relevant. I believe that following tradition is a good default, and that you need a reason to not follow it, as it may have a good reason for being there. Hence, you should understand the reason behind the tradition before you stop following it, and have a reason to not follow it. I see within a given tradition, new traditions arise over time, and some fall into neglect. Thus, other than the core values and practices of a tradition, it should be an evolving body of wisdom and practice to help people know what to do without figuring everything out for themselves. I believe this is a benefit as human lives are currently short, and it is very time consuming to figure out an entire way of life yourself, it is better to take a way of life and change those aspects you care about and choose to change.
