And yea, I don't really have sympathy for the guy. He, of all people, should have known how she was being treated by that family. If he didn't, then he was too focused on how she was treating him and not enough on her as a person. Knowing what he should about her family, he should have never considered doing what he did. Even elopement would have been a better alternative.
