That's why we see the Prince at the throne all the time. He's taken over in all aspects but title.

Yeah, but "Your son is such a homicidal maniac and utterly power crazed that at this point I think you're on his list of targets' might be a message even he can't ignore. The prince's grip is tenuous since he relies on his public image instead of the reality that he's a barbaric sociopath ready to backstab allies at a moment's notice. If you plot behind the scene you lose power from people knowing wtf you're doing.
