Looks more like they used this girl's confession to solidify Yamada's own affections for Akane. He's already more conscious of her and seeing her everywhere (like that girl who liked like Akane from behind in a previous chapter) but I don't think he understood what that meant until now. And the gloom and doom is probably him knowing whatever friendship he has with the girl who confessed will end since he's going to reject her (and the boy doesn't really have a lot of friends plus I don't think he likes intentionally hurting ppl). And with Akane being more reticent to confess, we're more likely to get a Yamada confession XD

@Moshimellow: I don't think he would pity-date her. At the very least because Akane, during one of her more vulnerable moments, talked about how having her ex be honest with her was something that made her relieved, despite how shitty that circumstance was.

He risks hurting someone (again) and potentially losing a friend, which would explain his bad mood. And, almost as if to reassure readers, it was Akane he sought at that time for reassurance and a reminder of where he can eventually be once he does reject his classmate's confession.
