The story literally starts with him complaining that he doesn't get it the material the class is studying, he probably has a massive negative opinion about himself. I'm assuming he needs to study/work extra hard to keep up with the class and his grades, even when asked to fill a form about his goals he couldn't think of anything he wanted to do.
