@Tamerlane I don't know if it is intentional on the author's part, but I agree that the difficulties Hachiko is facing is a decent description of those faced by people with neuropsychiatric disorders, such as autism. They are also shared by people with social anxiety, for example, as well as other psychiatric disorders. Both of those groups have in common that there is (usually) nothing obviously wrong with their bodies, but they still have a great deal of difficulty managing life in a world made for "ordinary" people - difficulties that can be just as debilitating as a physical disability.
