I also think is a good idea to have him. Neither side is trully good. One is driving the spirits to extinction and the other is going to monopolitize them and use them

Using him as a way to understand one of the enemies (because the other one has been chasing them for a while and even if is not 100% clear all their intentions we know aren't inocent either) which is also the one we know the least is great to plan strategies

It would be interesting if—the barrier being as-described and Zero being a spirit as-loosely-implied—they're both spirits and so inevitably kind-of like each other, despite everything else... because they're both inherently lovable, to spirits. Which they are.
